One of the things I am required to look into is the subject of African Americans and cancer. The topic that seems to be the most difficult is the topic of race in cancer research. A student of women's studies might, instead, find that the subject of gender is in fact related to this topic. Women in general have hormonal imbalances that affect their ability to detect and treat cancer.Next, the subject of anatomy comes into play. Women's cancers come in many different forms. One may suffer from endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer or lung cancer. The type of cancer would affect which organs are affected and also the treatment or cure options. Each type of cancer requires a different treatment plan.One type of cancer that is often considered non-lethal to white women is cervical cancer. In addition, many white women may also die from this dise ase but it can also affect black women. Both types of cancer can be hard to write about because of the topic that is presented.My students tend to focus on the obituary. However, I am of the belief that the subject is more powerful than the obituary. For example, when Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with terminal cancer she had already decided to give up her life as a doctor. She also had already taken steps to make the future available to her family in order to help them financially. The subjects of history are also more powerful.If I were asked what the subject of her obituary would be, I would tell them that it would be a personal reflection on Henrietta's relationship with her doctor and her relation to the medical profession. To my students I would say that the subject of her obituary will speak about the nature of doctor/patient relationships, the respect that is gained by doing an honest day's work and what it means to be a doctor. In my opinion, these are very powerful topics. They are also interesting to write about and many of my students find it very challenging to write about.
